Baramulla, Sep 19, KNT: A 37 year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court for stabbing to death a person in 2010 in North Kashmir’s Sopore town of Baramulla district.
Principal Sessions and District Judge, Baramulla, Sanjay Parihar sentenced Showkat Ahmed Tantray, a resident of Brat Kalan Sopore, relying on the statements of prosecution witnesses who had seen the convict with victim Altaf Ahmed Tantray, a resident of Gund Brat Sopore when he stabbed him to death near a local masjid 10 years ago.
The court as per news agency Kashmir News Trust also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakhs on the convict out of which Rs 1.50 lakh will be paid as compensation to victim’s family.
The victim was stabbed to death on 28 August 2010 after the convict and the victim entered into an argument over a matter involving a female. Police accordingly had registered an FIR vide number 436/2010 under section 302, 109 RPC.
The Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Nisar Ahmed who is presently posted as SHO Pattan filed challan against the convict, his brother and father. The court acquitted the father and the brother of the convict citing insufficient evidence.
At least 21 witnesses recorded their statements in 2 sitting trials. The convict is already languishing in jail since his arrest in 2010 after the crime. (KNT)
