Kuala Lumpur: Nafis Yaqoub, a young Thai man who was living illegally in Malaysia for the purpose of work and was arrested and put in prison.
While in Malaysia, one night he went out to buy some food, and on the way was apprehended by Malay police. Unable to show his legal documents, he was taken in custody and while in custody he admitted that he was a Thai and came to Malaysia illegally, so they sent him to prison to get him to be deported to his home country.
It is in prison, the famous video of him reciting Quran was shot and the same became popular on the internet.
The prison was very hot and there was no rug in the prison. Nafis had to take off his shirt and sat on it waiting for food. While he was waiting for food, he recited the Qur’an in his beautiful voice as insisted by jail inmates.
In the midst of all that, a prison warden secretly took a video of him reciting the Quran while other inmates were listening to him. The video was later uploaded into a social media, and it became sensational overnight in Malaysia. His plight received thousands of sympathies from fellow Malaysian Muslims, prompting an uproar and even a Malaysian minister visited him in prison.
He was later released after some jail term and completed a Malaysian da’wa tour. Today he is one of the popular imams and runs a madrassa, Madrasah Tahfiz Al-Qalam in Cambodia.
